The actual source of the Yamuna is located at the very difficult-to-reach Saptrishi Kund. You must have a guide to go there. It is believed that seven great Rishis-Kasyapa,Atri,Bhadravaj,Visvamitra,Gautama,Jamadagni,and Vasistha-performed austerities for millions of years here.Saptrishi kund is situated in the lap of the Bandarpunch Massif (6135 m). The location of the Kund is amidst magnificent and enchanting surroundings of the lofty rock strewn glacier. The 8 km. trek to Saptrishi Kund starts from Yamunotri temple. The whole trek passes through dense forests and rugged mountainous terrain. It takes 16 hours to go up and back down. You have to deal with the high altitude, climbing up hills and over rock,ice,snow, and water. The kund is about a half km. in diameter, and its water is dark blue with slushy snow. Very few people come here, as it is a difficult place to reach.

"At the beginning I was just following a friend, a friend who was going for a trek somewhere in the Kumaon Hills.One night train, one day jeep and we start walking. I discover a space wide ,wild and free from the realties of the city. I discover companions who, step after step, were trying to understand me and make me understand what life in the Himalayas is all about. After that, I went for another trek with the same companions. I don't know if there is an illness of the mountains but now I m just waiting for the next trek."
